I think the biggest issue with the 14 cabinets is if the cut-out is oversize for a standard 12 inch frame, and whether there's enough meat left to hold t-nuts. 15 cabinets are even more of a challenge because the baffle is milled for recessed mounting of the woofer.
Actually, according to Bill at GPA (who can re-cone these) the stock 34633 woofer for the Model 14 does have a 3 inch voice coil (he and Todd both speak very highly of this woofer) whereas the stock 33785 woofer for the Model 15 (which uses the same woofer as the Model 8 and 9) does not. The 34633 is a significant upgrade over it's predecessor, the 33785.....Quote:

It handles more power with a bigger(longer) motor and is 1.5db more sensitive. In room, in system the differences are pretty subtle. They're both very good sounding woofers. The 14 woofer will take a bit more pounding.Quote:

I agree they both sound great. I used to own a pair of Model 9's which has the 33785 woofer and they were a nice sounding speaker system. I sometimes played them with the Valencias I used to own. Believe it or not, the Model 9's got deeper bass than the Valencias did--most likely the cabinet tuning on the 846A's was the culprit. With some EQ however, I could get those 416A's in the Vals to thump no problem! I recall at one point doing A/B comparisons between my Valencias and my AS 101's to see which sounded "better". The Valencias were 16 ohm (416A, 806A, stock Altec crossover), the AS 101's were 8 ohms (416-8A, 806-8A, stock Heathkit crossover) and I guess not surprisingly, they sounded pretty different from each other (but both kicked @ss). For one thing, the Valencias needed a little more bass EQ to get some "real" bass. A funny thing about those Model 9's--I originally put them on top of the Valencias so that when I was reviewing mixes of my (rock) band, I could switch back and forth from the Model 9's to the Valencias to make sure the mixes sounded good on both speaker systems. At one point, I was curious to hear how they'd sound playing simultaneously with the Vals. The Model 9's were a little less efficient, but when you played them with the Valencias at the same time (speaker A and B switch on the amp both on), they gave the Vals noticeably more sparkle and deeper bass. When you turned them off, the Valencias sounded much more "midrangey" and it took a few moments for my ears to become accustomed to them on their own without the extra sparkle and thump of the Model 9's added to them. I've since sold all of them to finance my 19's and 14's--in all three instances they went to avid audiophiles who really loved Altecs so I guess I take comfort that they are most likely still being enjoyed and cherished today.....Quote:
